FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

These answers come from common patterns in Music Notes, trip packages, concert reminders, and parent communication.

Does my child need experience to join band?

No. Beginning band is designed for students who are learning. Students need curiosity, effort, and a willingness to try sounds that may not be beautiful right away.

How does my child choose an instrument?

Instrument choice is based on interest, comfort, available instruments, and ensemble balance. Students should be open-minded; sometimes the best fit is not the first instrument they imagined.

How often should students practice?

Short, regular practice is best. A few focused minutes repeated often will do more than one long session right before a concert or playing test.

Where do weekly reminders live?

Music Notes are the main weekly reference. Facebook and Instagram are used for quick updates, photos, and trip progress.

What is the portal for?

The portal at my.fnmusic.ca is for private family and student tools. Student-specific details should be handled there or through direct school communication.

Are trips mandatory?

Trip requirements vary by ensemble and event. Some trips are enrichment opportunities; others are tied closely to ensemble preparation. Current trip information will always come through Music Notes, meetings, forms, or the portal.

What should students bring for trips?

Students should follow the current packing list. Common items include instrument, music, uniform pieces, personal items, snacks or spending money, homework, and any instrument supplies such as reeds, oil, mallets, or sticks.

What if trip cost is a concern?

Please reach out early. Fundraising exists to help make opportunities more reachable, and the program does not want money to be the reason a hard-working student misses out.

What do students wear for performances?

Uniform expectations depend on the ensemble and event. Music Notes will explain what students need and when items should be returned.

How can parents help?

Read Music Notes, encourage practice, return forms on time, support fundraising, volunteer when possible, and ask questions before small issues become big ones.

Why are some details not posted publicly?

Student lists, balances, emergency contacts, rooming lists, payment sheets, and private forms belong in direct communication or the portal, not on the public website.

Where can relatives watch concerts?

When livestream or recording links are available, they are usually shared through Music Notes or social channels.

How much should students practice?

A strong target is about 100 minutes per week, split into short sessions. Students should warm up gently, work slowly on difficult spots, and build a routine that can actually last.

What supplies do students need?

Students need their instrument, music, pencil, and instrument-specific supplies. Reeds, valve oil, slide oil, sticks, mallets, headphones, or a Chromebook may be required depending on the instrument and grade level.

What are the uniform expectations?

RLA students generally wear the band t-shirt with clean pants and shoes. FNSS and Tour Band students may use the formal band uniform with black dress pants, black dress shoes, and black socks.

What is a band account?

A band account tracks fundraising and deposited money for band-related expenses. Private account instructions should come through the portal, Music Notes, or direct family communication.
